What is the purpose of bringing a pineapple to your first class in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ)? It is said to be an old tradition to bring a pineapple to your instructor on your first day of training BJJ. It is supposed to show dedication to BJJ and make your instructor treat you better, due to the effort and research you have already put in.
Or that is the story it is said to be about. Another option is that there never was a pineapple tradition in BJJ, but it was all made up in the forums on the internet to further confuse new BJJ trainers.
Personally, I have never seen or heard of anyone bringing a pineapple to their first BJJ class, so if I were to start again today, I probably wouldn’t bring one either.
Why is pineapple tradition hard to maintain in BJJ?
One reason why “the pineapple tradition” could be hard to maintain, is because everybody only starts BJJ once. Because they are just starting out, they are not often aware of all the traditions, facts and jokes about the sport. Therefore, people don’t bring pineapples to their first class, even if it was a real thing.
Is there any truth in the pineapple tradition?
Even though bringing a pineapple could have originally been a joke, if your instructor is aware of the “pineapple tradition”, there might be some upside to bringing one.
If you show that you have done your research and prepared well, you might be taken more seriously. The truth is that not every BJJ starter goes further than a few training sessions, not to talk about sticking long enough to get a blue belt.
Internet has a lot of images of people giving pineapples to their black belt instructors. It has become so popular by now, meme or not, that it is a very well-known meme or tradition, which ever you want to believe in.
Should you bring a pineapple to your first BJJ class?
There is no rule that you should bring one. If you want to take a bit lighter mood and do it despite the origins of it, why not? Your instructor might take it as a joke, then treat it like one. They might also take you more seriously due to it, because you have done your research.
If you don’t want to bring a pineapple, that is fine as well. Let’s say you are kicked out of the gym because you didn’t bring a pineapple. That gym probably wasn’t the right place to begin with.
So, should you bring a pineapple to your first BJJ lesson? Probably not. It might be nothing more than a meme today, so it wouldn’t probably bring any extra value to your lesson.
If you want to, despite it being a meme, go ahead. It is really only up to you, and everybody only gets their first BJJ lesson once. How do you want to use it?
