UFC Weight Classes in Both Lbs & Kg (Weight Divisions)

What are the UFC weight classes?

Despite the common misunderstanding that the UFC weight classes are the same as MMA weight classes, that is not the case. UFC has 8 weight divisions for men and 4 for women, whereas MMA has 14 weight divisions just for men.

In this post, we go through the weight divisions of the UFC and the main differences between MMA and UFC weight classes. Let’s get started.

What are the UFC weight classes?

As I mentioned before, UFC weight classes are not exactly the same as MMA weight classes.

Men’s UFC weight divisions only have 8 divisions, whereas MMA has 14 different weight classes. That is 6 weight classes less, even though some websites claim they are the same.

The UFC weight classes for men

UFC Weight ClassMinimum WeightMaximum Weigh
FlyweightNo minimum125 lb (56.7 kg)
Bantamweight125 lb (56.7 kg)135 lb (61.2 kg)
Featherweight135 lb (61.2 kg)145 lb (65.8 kg)
Lightweight145 lb (65.8 kg)155 lb (70.3 kg)
Welterweight155 lb (70.3 kg)170 lb (77.1 kg)
Middleweight170 lb (77.1 kg)185 lb (83.9 kg)
Light Heavyweight185 lb (83.9 kg)205 lb (93 kg)
Heavyweight205 lb (93 kg)265 lb (120 kg)

There is also no minimum weight to the flyweight class, or if there were, it would make no sense. The flyweight is the lowest weight class in men’s UFC divisions, so having a minimum weight would be nonsense.

It would also not be necessary. If you can have more weight on you when you fight, you should probably bulk up, since your opponent is likely going to weigh as much as they can.

As you can see, there are only 8 weight divisions for men in the UFC weight classes. MMA has 14 different divisions. More about MMA divisions later in this post.

The weight levels in UFC are the same as in MMA, but there are 4 fewer of them.

The UFC weight classes for women

UFC Weight ClassMinimum WeightMaximum Weigh
StrawweightNo minimum115 lb (52.2 kg)
Flyweight115 lb (52.2 kg)125 lb (56.7 kg)
Bantamweight125 lb (56.7 kg)135 lb (61.2 kg)
Featherweight135 lb (61.2 kg)145 lb (65.8 kg)

Women’s weight classes in UFC have only 4 divisions. The three highest are the same as the men’s lowest three, but they also have a Strawweight division, which men do not have.

What are MMA weight classes?

As I mentioned earlier in this post, UFC and MMA weight classes are not the exact same.

Even though the weights in the charts are the same, there are 6 fewer weight divisions in the UFC, than there are in the MMA.

Let’s go through the MMA weight classes and how they differ from the UFC.

Why are there weight classes in the UFC?

Weight classes or divisions are in place to make the fights more even. When the fighters are close to equal in size, the fight outcome comes to the skills of the fighters, instead of their mass.

If there were no weight classes and everybody was fighting in just one division, likely the bigger fighters would end up winning, even if the smaller fighters were more talented.

Thanks to weight classes, the outcome of the fight comes down to how good of a fighter you are, instead of your size.

I also have a full post on why does the UFC have weight classes. Check it out as well if interested.

How many weight classes are there in the UFC?

There are currently 8 weight classes in the UFC. The 8 classes are similar to MMA weight classes (Which have 14 weight classes) but without 6 of them.

The UFC weight classes are:

  • Flyweight
  • Bantamweight
  • Featherweight
  • Lightweight
  • Welterweight
  • Middleweight
  • Light heavyweight
  • Heavyweight

The weight classes that UFC does not have but MMA does are:

  • Strawweight
  • Super lightweight
  • Super welterweight
  • Super middleweight
  • Cruiserweight
  • Super heavyweight

In short, if you take MMA weight divisions and remove Strawweight, Cruiserweight, and everything with the word “super” in front of it, you get the current UFC weight divisions.

Are MMA and UFC weight classes the same?

MMA and UFC weight classes are not the exact same. MMA has 14 weight classes, whereas UFC has 8. UFC weight divisions are a trimmed version of the MMA weight divisions.

Here is a post about the differences between UFC and MMA.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, the UFC weight classes are a trimmed version of the MMA weight classes, but they are not the same.

The UFC has 8 weight classes, whereas MMA has 14 of them. There is a big difference.

Hopefully, this was helpful, have a wonderful day!
