Based on a lot of different martial artists’ opinions, the common opinion on Taekwondo and Karate was that Karate was more realistic and more smooth to practice, compared to newer Taekwondo. Therefore, if you had to pick one right now, Karate might be the better option.

Taekwondo, also known as Tae Kwon Do or Taekwon-Do and Karate, despite their place of origin are both comprehensive martial arts, that can be used in all forms of fighting, from standing positions all the way to the ground fighting aspect.

The difference comes down to how good of a school or Dojo you can find to practice the martial art at. If you can find a great school with a great teacher, martial art in this case does not make so big of a difference.

Which one is better for self-defense, Karate or Taekwondo?

Based on a lot of opinions about this I found online, and heard from the people I know, Karate seems to be the better option here. It is said to be more complete and everything clicks together better, compared to Taekwondo.

In any case, knowing any martial art and gaining mental toughness from it is a lot better, than no experience at all.
