MMA Weight Classes in Both Lbs & Kg (Weight Divisions)

MMA has become really popular in the past decade or so, but how do the weight divisions work in MMA?

There are 14 different weight divisions for men in MMA, and 4-5 weight divisions for women, depending on the organization. The highest weight class is Super heavyweight, which has no weight limit.

If you are looking for UFC weight classes that differ a little bit, check out this post: UFC weight classes.

Later in this post, we will have the full table of MMA weight classes, and some explanation of why the weight classes are necessary.

Why are there weight classes in MMA?

The purpose of weight classes or divisions in MMA is to make the fight depend more on the fighters’ skills, rather than their size. When the fighters are about the same size, the result of the fight comes down to who is a better fighter, rather than who is bigger.

That means you should be matched against fighters that are about the same size as you. There can be extremes, for example, the super heavyweight division does not have any limit. That means you might weigh 250 pounds, and be matched against someone who is 400 pounds. (Extreme example, I know)

What is the heaviest weight class in MMA?

The heaviest weight class in MMA for men is the super heavyweight. There is no upper limit and the minimum weight is 265lb or 120kg. For women, the heaviest weight class is the featherweight, which ranges from 135lb or 61.2kg to 145lb or 65.8kg.

What is the lightest weight class in MMA?

For men, the lightest weight class is strawweight, where fighters should be 115lb (52.2kg) or less. For women, it might be the same, or it might be the atomweight which is 105lb (48kg) depending on the organization.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, these were the weight divisions or weight classes for MMA. Some people think they are the exact same in the UFC, but that is not the case. There are only 8 weight classes for men in the UFC, yet there are 14 weight classes in MMA.

I have the post about UFC weight classes as well, check it out if interested.

I hope this was helpful, have a wonderful day!
