MMA for Self-Defense

MMA for Self-Defense (This is Why it Works so Well)

MMA is really popular in martial arts circles. But is MMA good for self-defense?

MMA is one of the best options for self-defense. This is because it focuses on all aspects of fighting, that might also come in handy in a street fight situation. No matter where the fight ends, practicing MMA will most likely prepare you for it.

Let’s take a closer look into what makes MMA so effective for self-defense and street-fight situations.

Is MMA good for self-defense?

MMA is one of the best sports that teach you to defend yourself. Even from a martial arts aspect, MMA is one of the best options for this purpose.

The thing that makes MMA so superior, is the fact that it focuses on all aspects of fighting. Those are standup fighting with punches and kicks, takedowns, and ground fighting.

Practicing MMA teaches you realistic ways to defend yourself in different situations. All the scenarios you go through are completely possible.

MMA is one of the most modern ways to defend yourself since it evolves all the time. The name comes from Mixed Martial Arts, which means you can combine different, most effective fighting styles according to your preferences.

If in the UFC or other MMA competitions, a new style of fighting comes up superior, it will soon be added to the regular MMA set.

For example, Brazilian jiu-jitsu is not that old as a martial art. It was developed around the 1920s. Since it became so effective even in MMA contests, it is nowadays a really common form of ground fighting in MMA.

For stand-up fighting, you can choose pretty much anything, from traditional Asian martial arts all the way to boxing and kickboxing. There are really no rules on which martial arts you should combine when it comes to MMA.

That is why MMA is so popular and effective. It is so adaptable to the modern needs of self-defense due to changing fighting styles.

Is MMA useful in a street fight?

MMA is extremely useful when it comes to street fights. I probably don’t have to tell you that street fighting is really dangerous and you should try to avoid it at all costs.

However, sometimes the conflict is unavoidable, and if that happens, MMA is one of the best martial arts to defend yourself.

Even though it teaches you to defend yourself with your bare hands, there is no guarantee that your opponent won’t be carrying a knife or something else.

That is why you should always try to avoid fights, even if it might seem like a coward thing to do. At least you will be alive at the end of the day.

There is only one form of martial arts that I think is more suitable for self-defense. (From the more well-known martial arts). That is Krav Maga, which teaches you to defend yourself and to survive at all costs, in all situations. The best 5 martial arts for self-defense can be found here, including Krav Maga.

More about MMA and Krav Maga comparison below.

Is MMA better than Krav Maga for self-defense?

MMA and Krav Maga focus on different things, and from these two, Krav Maga is more designed towards self-defense.

MMA will prepare you better for unarmed combat, whereas Krav Maga also focuses on defending yourself against knives and guns.

Krav Maga however can not be used as effectively in MMA contests. This is because it focuses on survival, not on sports fighting. There are forbidden techniques, such as attacking your opponent’s eyes, which is highly prohibited in MMA and professional fighting matches.

But for purely self-defense purposes, Krav Maga is more all-inclusive than MMA.

The good thing about MMA though is the fact that you can also compete with it, and make your own mix of martial arts.

Is MMA better than boxing for self-defense?

MMA is a more comprehensive martial art for self-defense than boxing. This is because MMA focuses on all aspects of fighting, whereas boxing only focuses on striking.

That doesn’t mean boxing is useless and you shouldn’t do it. However, a lot of times, self-defense and street fight situations end up on the ground.

If that is the case, MMA will prepare you for grappling as well, whereas boxing does not include ground fighting training.

Final thoughts

So, is MMA the best fighting style?

In conclusion, MMA is one of the best martial arts for self-defense. I have ranked it first on my list, above Krav Maga, because MMA gyms are a lot easier to find than Krav Maga ones.

That is what makes MMA even better. The accessibility of the training places. MMA, due to its popularity has a ton of places to train at.

Here are a few things to look out for in an MMA gym, if you are planning on starting.

Keep in mind that no matter what martial art you start, you will probably get better at defending yourself, compared to not training any martial art.

That being said, I also have a lot more posts about different martial arts and self-defense on my site. Check them out as well if interested.

Hopefully this was helpful, have a wonderful day!
