Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Overrated? (2023)

Is Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) as overrated as many people seem to think? I don’t think BJJ is overrated at all. BJJ is a very efficient sport, and it has become more popular in the past decade or two. But overrated? Not in my opinion.

It is, of course, a personal opinion question more than anything. But think about it like this: Would there be as many BJJ trainers currently, if it wasn’t good for something? Maybe the thing that makes it so good for some people is its popularity. There are a lot of gyms to choose from.

What is BJJ good for?

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is good for several things. It can help you lose weight, find new friends, or even help you defend yourself if you find yourself in a situation where running is not an option.

BJJ also has some mental benefits some people claim. Including me. Whenever I am training BJJ, my mind is off all the stress. I can not think of anything else but the moment I am in, and it feels great.

It’s also great if you are competitive, but team sports are not for you. BJJ has a lot of tournaments all over the world, and you can participate in them since you are a white belt.

Benefits of BJJ being so popular

Due to popularity and even like some people call it, being “overrated”, there are benefits to BJJ being so popular as well. There are a lot more gyms available to choose from. If one gym is too expensive or the instructor is not for your taste, try the gym next door. Well, maybe not that close, but you get the point, there is a lot of gyms out there, due to the popularity BJJ has achieved.

There is also more gear available. Different Gi’s all the equipment made for BJJ alone, not that it would need one, but companies still keep finding new things to sell. You have more options when choosing your training gear overall. I think that is another good thing.

The third reason BJJ, being so popular, brings in is that there are a lot of competitions available. Even if you happen to live in a smaller country or not in the center of everything, chances are, there are some local tournaments as well, if enough people participate.

Reasons why BJJ is so popular nowadays in this post.

Should you start training BJJ?

There are many reasons to start BJJ. One is that due to its popularity, there are a lot of gyms and gear options as I already mentioned.

No matter what your reason is, if you feel like training in a martial art, BJJ could be the right option for you. I have a post about reasons to start training BJJ, you can read it here.

Final thoughts

So, is BJJ really so overrated? Not in my eyes. Even though it is popular, there is a reason for its popularity, other than being overrated. BJJ is efficient and anybody can train it. If they didn’t like it, they would switch to some other martial art or sport, right?

Some might say it is too slow-paced or something, so it’s not suitable for street fights. That all depends on what are your expectations from the sport. If you want to “street fight” what I highly would advise against, then maybe something striking would be better.

Overall, I think BJJ is a great sport, and because of the popularity it has gotten, it has become easier for everybody to get access to BJJ gyms and gear.

Here is a post where we go through why BJJ is not a waste of time.

Hopefully this was helpful to you, have a nice day.
