It has come to my attention that some people say Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a waste of time.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu most likely is not a waste of time. The majority of people will significantly benefit from training Brazilian jiu-jitsu, due to it being a great cardio and strength training combined with various techniques that can be used for self-defense.
Let’s take a better look into why BJJ is not a waste of time.

As mentioned earlier, there are a lot of reasons why BJJ is not a waste of time.
BJJ is a great way to get moving
The biggest reason BJJ is worth practicing is the part that gets you moving. A lot of jobs nowadays are office jobs where you will sit at your desk for the most part.
BJJ offers a great alternative and a fun way to exercise and get your heart rate up. Practicing BJJ can also make you burn more calories on a weekly basis, which can help you to either stay in shape or to get in shape.
BJJ can be used for self-defense
Even though BJJ is not the best option for self-defense, it is way better than no martial arts experience at all.
Knowing how to handle yourself in a fight, or just acknowledging how much damage you can do with just your body can help you to avoid fights.

You can meet new friends training BJJ
Practicing BJJ you will most likely meet new people unless you already knew all the people in your gym.
That might be a good addition, even if you were not looking for new friends. You will at least have one thing in common: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
People at schools and job coaches always say “networking is really important”. You can do that even when not working. You might meet someone important as you practice BJJ, therefore, BJJ would not be a waste of time even for your career.
Of course, that is not certain, but there is a good possibility.
You can compete in BJJ tournaments
BJJ is a great way to compete if you are a competitive person. Due to the popularity of BJJ, there are a lot of BJJ competitions and tournaments all around the world.
The best part is that you don’t have to be a black belt in order to attend a competition. You can start competing as a white belt, as soon as you handle the basics of BJJ.
Competitions are a great way to keep yourself motivated and to keep practicing BJJ, even if you one day didn’t feel like so. Knowing there is a big competition coming out in a few months can give you that little extra motivation to attend the class.
BJJ is an investment in yourself
BJJ is really an investment in yourself and in your health.
Even if you had no interest towards martial arts or self-defense, BJJ would still most likely have some benefits for you.
It is true that BJJ is more fun if you like it and if you don’t like martial arts, there are a lot better options for you.
However, that doesn’t change the fact that BJJ is a great sport. You get to develop your BJJ skills and at the same time do some strength and cardio training.
