Is Brazilian jiujitsu a good workout?

Brazilian jiujitsu (BJJ) is a great full-body workout. It includes a good warm-up, learning new techniques, and sparring with others. All this combined is a great way to improve your overall physical condition, in a fun, social way.

Let’s dive into the different aspects that make BJJ such an amazing way to work out.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu activates a lot of muscles in your body

First of all, you will use a lot of different muscles in different situations of training.

When sparring, you are constantly in contact with your opponent, and your muscles are activated. This is a great way to find new muscles that you didn’t even know exists.

I remember my first BJJ lesson. The day after, every muscle in my body was so sore I could barely get out of bed. It was an amazing feeling. As I kept going, my muscles didn’t get so sore anymore, but it still felt like I had done something physically exhausting that improved my overall condition over time.

Due to using a lot of energy when training BJJ, it can be used as a tool for losing weight as well. Here is a post about BJJ for weight loss.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a good social sport

When training BJJ, you are not doing it alone (most of the time). Even though you can do solo drills as well, most of the training happens in lessons, where there are other people present as well.

It is a good way to find new friends and have fun while working out and learning new techniques. The belt system makes it even more fun, as you progress, like in some other martial arts, you have a chance to upgrade your belt color.

Some, I would say, most of the BJJ clubs also have different parties, such as Christmas parties and such. That is another way to find out more about your training buddies.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu can improve your flexibility

When training BJJ, the lessons most of the time start with warmups that contain some stretching. This is because some of the moves are easier done when you are more flexible.

The lesson usually ends with stretching as well, at least at my BJJ gym.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu can improve your eye-hand coordination

Training BJJ requires you to be alert when learning new techniques as well as when sparring with others. You need to be aware of how you position yourself at all times. This requires good eye-hand coordination.

Don’t worry if you don’t yet have perfect eye-hand coordination. It will improve as you go. There are no requirements to start BJJ; anybody can do it. You, however, have to take training seriously. If you just go chill to the gym and do it half speed, people will not take it nicely.

Sparring will get your heart rate up

In BJJ, usually there is a time for sparring as well. This is where you can test out your new techniques against others. This is, in my opinion, the best part of the lesson.

When sparring, it is constantly moving. It is almost like meditating. You cannot think of anything else, or your opponent will make you tap out.

Sparring will also make your heart rate go up since you are constantly in contact with your opponent.

You will learn how to use less energy as you progress

When you first start, you might get really exhausted during sparring. When you are matched against more experienced BJJ hobbyists, they can easily drain your energy.

They can put you in positions that you have no possibility of escaping, yet you spend tons of energy trying to (I’m speaking from personal experience).

So, as you progress and get the hang of the sport, you will learn how to use your energy more efficiently. When you know the techniques better, you don’t have to waste your energy on something that you know won’t work.

Final thoughts

So, is Brazilian jiu-jitsu a good workout? I would say it is an excellent one. It will go as strength training, cardio, stretching as well as mental benefits. As I mentioned, the sparring part can really get your mind off all the stress of the outside world. You can only focus on the moment, and it is an amazing feeling.

Keep in mind that different BJJ gyms might have different ways of doing things. They can vary, but overall, BJJ is a great workout.

Hopefully, this was helpful, have a nice day.
