Karate is one of the most popular Japanese martial arts out there, but do you have to be fit to start Karate?
You don’t have to be in perfect shape and fit to start Karate. You can use Karate to get into better shape. By adopting the Karate “mindset”, you can start making better decisions on what you eat as well, and get to better shape with Karate training.
In this post, we go through different physical requirements to start Karate, and how fit you have to be.
Let’s get started!
Do you have to be fit and in shape to start Karate?
You really don’t have to be in great or even good physical condition to start practicing Karate.
Especially as you are just a beginner, the Karate teacher or “Sensei” does not expect much from you anyway.
The starter Karate classes are for people who have not trained in martial arts before and might be out of shape.
That is good news. Karate can be used to get you in better shape and live a healthier lifestyle overall.
Therefore; as long as you can walk by yourself and throw a punch, you should be in good enough shape to start practicing Karate!
What are the physical requirements for starting Karate?
The physical requirements of Karate are not too strict. Even though they might vary depending on the Karate Dojo you practice at, in the Dojo where I trained, the requirements were basically:
- You have to be able to walk yourself
- Be open to practicing hard
That was pretty much it. There were people who were really out of shape, but they managed to do the exercises at their own pace.
Should you lose weight before starting Karate?
You don’t necessarily need to lose weight before starting Karate. You can do that while training Karate. On the other hand, if you are in really bad shape, it could help your training if you were in better physical condition.
Therefore, unless you are in really bad shape and get out of breath just from walking, you don’t really have to lose weight before starting Karate (usually).
That depends on your unique situation and the Karate Dojo you are going for. There are differences between the Dojos as well and their training styles.
Can skinny people start Karate?
Skinny people can definitely start Karate. Being skinny should not stop you from starting Karate. Karate can help you to build some muscle and adopt a healthier lifestyle overall.
There is no a certain weight bracket you have to be in to start Karate. Unlike MMA and other more competitive martial arts, Karate is great for just casual training and healthier lifestyle.
Can Karate get you to better shape?
Karate can definitely start a snowball effect into getting you to better shape.
On top of the great feeling you get after a Karate lesson, you might start eating cleaner automatically, since you don’t want to waste all the progress you made at the lesson.
Also, Karate can help you to build the discipline to stay on the right track with your training.
On top of getting into better shape, practicing Karate and seeing you learn the martial art can be really rewarding experience.
In conclusion, you don’t have to be fit or in great shape to start practicing Karate.
In fact, Karate can be a great way to help you get into better shape and turn your life into a better direction, from a training standpoint.
Of course there can be differences between different Karate Dojos and their requirements, but in general, pretty much anyone should be able to start Karate.
I hope this was helpful, have a wonderful day!
